Doulas ~ The Role of the Doula

What do doulas do that produce such amazing results?

Doulas give emotional support:

They work with you before you give birth to your baby so you are prepared in the best possible way.

Doulas give physical support:

They work with your body before birth by showing you exercises and positioning to make the closing months of pregnancy more comfortable. Doulas can also help you to assume positions in labor and during pushing that naturally enhance labor and reduce discomfort. Your doula may help you get on the Birth Ball or use the Labor Tub to relax muscles. Massage, aromatherapy, acupressure, counterpressure, breathing and relaxation skills are also part of the physical support you will receive from your doula.

Doulas give informational support:

During labor, your doula can repeat things to you that the nurse or doctor have said to you. They may be able to give additional information on procedures or interventions that the care givers suggest, thus helping you to make the best informed choice.

Compared to epidural anesthesia (sometimes costing over $700) or cesarean births (sometimes costing over $1000), doula care is inexpensive. Costs for doula care depend on where you live, but generally fall between $200 and $500. More and more insurance companies are becoming interested in doula care for the benefits to their customers and the cost savings for themselves!
