Witch Hazel

Ever wonder what Witch Hazel is? That substance that almost miraculously heals the perineum after childbirth?

Witch Hazel, or Hamamelis virginiana is a tree and an herb, native to America but also now grows in Europe. The leaves and bark of the tree are used in herbal medicines. The tree at maturity is about 15-20 feet tall with green leaves and obvious yellow flowers. The flowers bloom in late October and early December. Because of the odd time for the flowers to bloom, Native Americans thought the Great Spirit had done this to show them the great healing powers of Witch Hazel.

Witch hazel has been used for many conditions including cold sores, eczema, hemorrhoids, canker sores, Crohn's disease, menorrhagia, varicose veins and for wound healing, particularly the perineum after childbirth. Some studies suggest that the tannins and oils of witch hazel strengthens veins, acts as a vasoconstrictor, lowers local skin temperature and thus acts as an anti-inflammatory and astringent.

Although there are no reported side effects from topical use of Witch Hazel, drinking large amounts of Witch Hazel tea with the high tannin content has produced reports of kidney and liver damage.

Witch hazel comes in several forms including small pads for topical use. Some pads contain aloe vera, peppermint, eucalyptus and other elements such as mentyl ester, which is a natural skin coolant. It also comes in a liquid form and when a cotton ball is moistened, it can calm pain and relieve itching chigger and tick bites, as well as mosquito bites, and poison ivy rash.
